The perimeter shape of these earrings is very familiar; carrying a strong Egyptian aesthetic as well as a simple form I often come back to, one of nothing more than three arcs. The processes and tools of Repousse and Chasing I use are identical to those used by ancient artisans founding the similarity of appearance with my work and those pieces that have survived through time. Fine ancient work in high karat gold doesn’t look the way it does because it is old, it looks as it does because that is how it was made to look. Of late I have been attracted to plain open surface areas with little detail in which I can for-front texture rather than design. This looks simple but requires perfect preparation of the shape, volume and contour to be textured. It’s harder than it seems but can reveal a deep prismatic luster to high karat gold.
